13 Steps On How To Make Cosplay Wig Look Natural And Real 22

There are obvious advantages to wearing wigs and extensions, but there are also some disadvantages. One of the disadvantages is that it can sometimes give your wig a very fake & ‘wiggy’ look. So, what are the ways to make sure your cosplay hair doesn’t look so false?

Step 1

When buying a cosplay wig or wearing one that you already have, make sure the style matches your character’s hairstyle and color. If your character has long brown hair and you buy a short blue wig, it isn’t going to look very realistic!

Step 2

Look at yourself in the mirror wearing the wig/extensions. If it’s a little too shiny or lop-sided, that isn’t going to look real either. Adjust the wig accordingly to look your best.

Step 3

Now here comes a very important step: Get the right color of concealer and foundation for your skin type. If you have dry skin, get a creamy concealer in a color that matches your skin tone.

If you have oily or combination skin, get a liquid or powder foundation in color closest to your skin tone. This is so important because if you don’t use the right color of foundation for your skin type, especially dry skin, it will make it look even more unnatural and waxy.

Step 4

Put concealer on the parts of your face that stick out. If you have a big forehead, put some concealer on your hairline and temples. Also, put some under your eyes and chin to make those areas look seamless.

Step 5

Put foundation all over your face to blend everything together. If you have dry skin, using a liquid foundation will make your face look more natural because it’s not as matte or waxy-looking.

Step 6

You can also put a little bit of highlight on the top of your cheekbones and a little bit down your nose for a nice glow under the lights! Most cosplayers use NYC Bronzer in ‘Sunny’ because it’s not too shimmery. The shimmer will catch the light and draw attention to those areas under the lights.

Step 7

A lot of people forget about eyebrows, but they’re actually really important to the character! If you don’t have arched or even eyebrows already, use a pencil and draw them in. You can also use eyebrow gel and/or concealer if your eyebrows are super light.

Step 8

Now that you’ve done all of this amazing makeup for your eyes and eyebrows, you might be wondering what to do for blush and lip color! If the character is very simple with a light pink face and red lipstick, keep it simple. But if your character has super rosy cheeks (like most Disney princesses) and bright red lips (like Ariel & Belle), then go all out!

Step 9

OK, so now that you’ve got all that makeup on, it’s time to think about your wig. It looks darker or lighter than your hair? You can use a spray bottle with water and some conditioner mixed in to make the color more similar.

If it’s too shiny, spritz some of your matte setting sprays on it before you put it on to dull the shine.

Step 10

Anything too long or too short? You can either trim it up with scissors, use extensions, or cut the bangs to your liking! If you’re using extensions, make sure they blend in with your wig color by choosing a similar color. Extensions are great if you want to make your wig look thicker and longer.

Step 11

So, you’ve got all your makeup on and did a great job blending everything together! But it’s probably obvious to everyone that the wig is not your real hair, so how can we fix that? You can use concealer around the part where your head meets the wig to blend out any lines for a more natural look.

Step 12

Put all of your hair on top of your head and use bobby pins to pin it up! If you’re not too comfortable with the placement, put a wig cap on underneath first to keep everything in place. Most usually do a high ponytail or really tight buns for this step because anything else will look too casual.

Step 13

Finally, put the wig on! If you have a roller under the wig cap to keep everything in place while you wear it, take it out and put it at the nape of your neck. This is where I usually pin into place with bobby pins just so that there isn’t any extra room that could ruin the look of the wig.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Cosplay Wigs

Choosing the right cosplay wig is important to help you look at the part of your favorite character. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right wig:

  • Make sure the color of the wig is close to your natural hair color. This will help it blend in better and look more natural.
  • If the wig is too shiny, use a matte setting spray to dull the shine.
  • If the wig is too dark or too light, you can use a spray bottle with water and some conditioner mixed in to make the color more similar.
  • If the wig is too long or too short, you can trim it up with scissors, use extensions, or cut the bangs to your liking.
  • Extensions are great if you want to make your wig look thicker and longer.
  • If the wig is too big or looks funny, pull out the bobby pins and place it in different ways until you get comfortable with the fit.
  • Make sure the cap size of the wig fits well and doesn’t slide around.
  • If the wig is too shiny, spray on some more matte setting spray to dull it. You can also use black eyeshadow or any translucent powder to get rid of shine.
  • If you have banged on your wig and they don’t look natural enough, cut them to where you want them with small scissors or eyebrow scissors. You can also use eyebrow gel and/or concealer to blend them in more.

There you have it – that’s all there is to making your cosplay wig look natural.
