The Sword Art Online anime is one of the most popular anime of all time. One of its protagonists, Kirito, is a badass protagonist who can’t be killed when in the game. He wears a custom-made suit of armor with a sword at his side for when he goes on adventures in Aincrad.

No one will know who you are under this mask – but you’ll be sure to win any cosplay event you enter with this outfit.

How to Make a Kirito Cosplay Costume

To start, you’ll need to have the right measurements in order to get started. You’ll want to take your chest measurement, which is the widest part of your chest, in inches. If you’re female, then you may want to measure around the fullest part of your bust or bra size.

For males, it’s usually around their hip size or waist measurement. Next, take your height in inches and divide that by 2.5; this will help give you an idea of how long you’ll want your sword blade (in this case) for your character’s costume.

Remember that not all costumes are created equal-everyone has different skill levels and crafting abilities, so don’t be afraid to get creative or improvise on what you have.

Materials Needed:

Start by gathering up the following materials:

  • Black stretch satin fabric (preferably a thicker type)
  • A piece of cardboard that’s about 1″ thick and covers a little bit more than a 12″ x 16″ area (optional)
  • A hot glue gun
  • Heat safe gloves (so you don’t burn your fingers!)
  • Scissors or a rotary cutter
  • Straight pins

Instructions:

And now that you have all of the necessary materials, it’s time to get started! Here are the instructions you should follow:

Step 1

First, cut out your shape-you may either use a Kirito cosplay reference picture or get creative and draw your own design on a piece of paper to use as a template. Your final product should be slightly larger than the size of a wide noodle box top (about 16″ x 12″) so that you can have enough room to cut, sew, glue etc.

Step 2

Next, pin your fabric together and cut it out using your reference picture; remember to leave an extra half-inch on each side of the material.

Step 3

Now, with the right sides of the fabric together, sew up the sides and around the neck, hole-leaving an opening on one side so you can turn it inside out and stitch it back up! Leave a small seam allowance (1/4″) if possible.

Step 4

Next, glue the edges of the fabric together to create your final cosplay costume piece. Once it dries (about 30 minutes), flip it inside out and stuff it with newspaper or plastic bags, so it maintains its shape while you finish up. You can also sew up the opening that you left open so that your costume doesn’t unravel.

Step 5

Next, take the cardboard piece and glue it to the back of your fabric-weighing it down so that it holds its shape-this step is optional but recommended! You should also place a ruler or another thin, straight object across the blade and leave it overnight to ensure it dries properly.

Step 6

Lastly, sew up the holes that you left on either side of your fabric piece, and you’re done. You can now dye the costume using Rit Dye (following the instructions in how to dye fabric) in black or leave it as is.

You can also use an additional sheet of cardboard or plastic board under your blade to give it more strength and shape.
