One of the breakout stars from the movie Guardians of the Galaxy was the lovable Rocket Raccoon. Cosplayers went wild for this character and created some amazing costumes that showed just how much they loved him. If you’re looking to cosplay as Rocket, we’ve got all the tips you need to make your costume perfect.

How to Make Rocket Guardians of The Galaxy Cosplay

Rocket is definitely one of the most popular cosplay options from Guardians of the Galaxy, and for a good reason. He has an awesome design, with his huge backpack and machine guns, but he’s still very cute when you get down to it.

There are a lot of different parts needed to make this costume work, and we’ve got you covered.

Headpiece

The first part of your Rocket costume is the most important. You’ll need to order a headband with two large circles at either side of it for ears. These have to be made out of firm but soft material so they hold their shape but are still comfortable to wear.

You can make this yourself or buy one already made. There are also commercial versions, although they tend to be pretty expensive.

Body

The next part of your costume is a tiny little raccoon torso that attaches to the headband with a strap. There are two versions of this available commercially, but you can also make your own pretty easily. Just use an old shirt that fits the intended wearer and lay it flat on the ground.

Draw out a raccoon body shape onto the fabric and cut it out, so there’s no seam allowance left. Then turn it inside-out and sew up the back and along the bottom edge.

Next, cut out a square of material from an old shirt or other fabric, about 8″ x 8″, and place it right side down on the floor around the edge of your raccoon torso piece.

Draw around all four sides, so you have a pattern for this part. Cut out two of these pieces and sew one onto each side of your torso piece, sandwiching the body between them.

Last, use a drawstring to close up the hole at the bottom. Use a strong cord or thin rope so it can hold up your weight but is still comfortable for you to wear. When it’s done, attach the headpiece, and you’re all set.

Backpack

Your final piece of the Rocket Raccoon costume is his big red backpack. This is a great way to show off your love for this character and can even be worn with other cosplays to give them a little extra flare. To make your own, you’ll need to order a large piece of red fabric with the bottom already hemmed.

Then, cut out your shapes onto the fabric. You’ll need two large circles for the ears (make sure you cut them on the fold, so both pieces are identical) and a trapezoid shape for a tail. The easiest way to reproduce this is to lay a shirt over plastic bags and trace around it to get the right shapes.

After you’ve cut out all your pieces, fold the ears and tail’s bottom edges about 1/2″ inward and sew them down. Next, sew two lines of gathering stitches along either side of the beak piece. Then do one last gathering stitch along each edge of both earpieces.

To attach everything, pin the earpieces to each side of the back and sew them into place. Then connect the tailpiece to the top center of your backpack and sew that into place.

Tail

Your raccoon tail is a pretty simple piece, so you can make it from scratch or from what you have available around the house. Make a simple triangle out of felt and sew it onto the side of the waistband.

Cut out your designs, such as Rocket’s “RR” logo or any other details you want to add and glue them on with fabric glue.

Guns

Finally, for this particular cosplay, you’ll need two machine guns that mimic Rocket’s big guns. These are pretty easy to make, but you’ll need to order two large plastic toy guns for the base of them. Just paint them red and give them a nice coat of silver spray paint to finish it off.

Finish your DIY Rocket costume by finding the right-sized shoes and gloves for the character, as well as a brown belt to hold up your pants.

Once you’ve finished, find the perfect place to take pictures of it. Studio backdrops are great for cosplayers because they look like a real-life movie scene.

You can use either blue or green backdrops for this Rocket costume, so choose the one that works best for your photos. Remember to take your pictures outside so you can have an awesome background in them.

Once you have some great pictures, upload them to social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, so everyone can see your awesome cosplay. If you used a blue backdrop, but the pictures online so people know what color backdrop they should use if they want to cosplay as Rocket too.

In Conclusion

The end result is a smart and stylish Rocket Raccoon cosplay that’ll definitely stand out in any crowd. The best thing about this cosplay is that you can add details such as a red bandanna and holster belt for more of the movie-inspired look.

If you want a Rocket Raccoon costume for cosplay or Halloween, then this is the right tutorial for you. It’s relatively simple but produces great results. You don’t have to stick exactly to this tutorial, either. Feel free to put your own spin on it. The most important thing is that you have fun.
